As someone who was reading comics at the time this story was first published, I recall it as an odd time for Superman and his friends, ultimately leading up to the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” storyline. At the time, my Silver Age-trained sensibilities were confused by the kinds of changes that were happening, but, in retrospect, I see them more as writers, artists, and editors looking to refresh the stories and characters. I don’t know that this always worked as well as it might have, but I think this story was at least the beginning of a good approach. It certainly helped give me a new respect for the character of Lana, while retaining respect for Lois. I look forward to hearing your “take” on more stories from around this time.
