Future State: Gotham to Have a Manga-Inspired Look!

By DC Publicity

Red Hood Hunts Heroes for The Magistrate in this Manga-Influenced Ongoing Series

Debut Issue Includes Reprint of 1996 Batman: Black and White Story by
AKIRA Creator Katsuhiro Otomo

On Sale May 11, 2021

Although the DC Future State event was only during January and February, that doesn’t mean there aren’t more stories to tell about those possible futures of the DC Universe. And on May 11, fans will find out that the end of DC Future State was just the beginning, especially for Jason Todd, a.k.a. Red Hood.

Forsaking his friends, Red Hood is now a gun-for-hire for The Magistrate, using his role as a costumed vigilante to hunt down other heroes as part of Gotham City mayor Christopher Nakano’s “zero tolerance” policy on masked heroes. Red Hood continues his hero hunting at the top of the food chain, with Tim (Jace) Fox, The Next Batman, in his crosshairs!

Co-written by Joshua Williamson and Dennis Culver, this new ongoing series features art by Giannis Milonogiannis, whose black and white artwork provides anime/noirish atmosphere to this series. For fans of both anime and DC, issue #1 includes a special treat: a bonus story, reprinting “The Third Mask,” written and drawn by Katsuhiro Otomo, legendary creator of the iconic manga and anime AKIRA. The story was originally released in issue #4 of Batman: Black and White, on July 10, 1996.

Digital issues of Batman/Fortnite: Zero Pointdownloaded from DC UNIVERSE INFINITE (U.S. only) will also include these bonus digital codes. As a bonus item, fans who redeem all six codes will unlock a new Armored Batman Zero Outfit.

But while you know Batman (if you’re reading this, we’re presuming that’s a safe bet) you may not yet know Fortnite. We’ve got you covered—along with all the details on how to redeem your DC-themed Fortnite digital items thanks to a FAQ from our friends at Fortnite.

Fortnite is a Pretty Big Deal

Fortnite is a completely free cross-platform game where players fight to be the last one standing in Battle Royale, join forces to make their own Creative games, or catch a live show with their friends at Party Royale. With more than 350 million accounts globally and an enthusiastic fanbase, players can jump into the action on PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, Android, PC and Mac.

But What’s Batman Doing Here?

He’s trying to figure that out himself. As Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point #1 starts, a mysterious crack appears in the Gotham City sky, threatening reality itself. Batman—along with some other familiar DC faces—is pulled into it, with the Dark Knight waking up in the unfamiliar world of Fortnite with no memory and no choice other than to fight his way out.

Who’s the Fish Guy?

That’s Fishstick, one of the many visually distinctive and fan-favorite Fortnitecharacters to appear in Batman/ Fortnite: Zero Point.

This Isn’t the First DC/Fortnite Collaboration

While Batman/Fortnite: Zero Point is the first comic book collaboration between DC and Fortnite, there’s a history here, as the game has previously offered players in-game outfits of DC characters including Batman, Aquaman, Catwoman, Harley Quinn, Poison Ivy, the Joker and more.

  • When our heroes saved the Muliverse from Perpetua in Dark Nights: Death Metal, everything was put back where it belonged…and we do mean everything. All the damage from all the Crises was undone, and heroes long thought gone returned from whatever exile they had been in. Most of them, at least. Alan Scott, the Green Lantern from the Justice Society of America, has noticed some of his allies are still missing in action, and he’s determined to find them. There are others, though, who would rather remain hidden than explain themselves, like Roy Harper, a.k.a. Arsenal, a man who should be dead but now is not. Plus, what does all this mean for the DCU’s place in the Multiverse? On opposite sides of a dimensional divide, both Barry Allen and President Superman ponder this question. Not to mention the Darkseid of it all! Or a team of Multiversal heroes called Justice Incarnate!

With five dollars to her name, she’s sent to live in Gotham City after battling a lot of hard situations as a kid. But everything changes when Gotham’s finest drag queen, Mama, takes her in. And at first it seems like Harleen has finally found a place to grow into her most “true true,” with new best friend Ivy at Gotham High. But then Harley’s fortune takes another turn when Mama’s drag cabaret becomes the next victim in the wave of gentrification that’s taking over the neighborhood. Now Harleen is mad. In turning her anger into action, she is faced with two choices: join Ivy, who’s campaigning to make the neighborhood a better place to live, or join The Joker, who plans to take down Gotham one corporation at a time. From Eisner Award and Caldecott Honor-winning author Mariko Tamaki (This One Summer) and Eisner Award-nominated artist Steve Pugh (The Flintstones) comes a coming-of-age story about choices, consequences, and how a weird kid from Gotham goes about defining her world for herself.
